Hannah's Prayer for a Son

1 Samuel 1:1-20

Chapter 1
1 There was a man from Ramathaim-zophim of Mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah son of Jeroham son of Elihu son of Tahath son of Zuph, an Ephrathite. 2 And he had two wives; the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the second was Peninnah; and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. 3 And that man went up from his city year by year to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at Shiloh, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to the LORD, were there. 4 On that day when Elkanah sacrificed, he gave portions to his wife and to all his sons and daughters. 5 And to Hannah he would give one worthy portion, for he loved Hannah, and the LORD had shut her womb. 6 And her rival also provoked her, provoked her bitterly, because the LORD had shut up her womb. 7 And so he would do year by year. Whenever she went up to the house of the LORD, they would anger her, and she would weep and not eat. 8 And Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart evil? Am I not better to you than ten sons?" 9 And Hannah arose after she had eaten in Shiloh and after she had drunk, and Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. 10 She was bitter in soul and prayed to the LORD, weeping as she wept. 11 She vowed a vow and said, "LORD of hosts, if you will see the affliction of your handmaid and remember me and not forget your handmaid but will give your handmaid seed of men, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and a razor shall not go up on his head." 12 As she continued to pray before the LORD, Eli was watching her mouth. 13 And Hannah was speaking in her heart only; her lips moving, but her voice not heard. And Eli thought her drunk. 14 And he said to her, "How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine." 15 And Hannah answered and said, "No, my lord, I am a woman hard of spirit. I have not drunk wine or strong drink, and I have poured out my soul before the LORD." 16 Do not give your maidservant before the face of a son of Belial, for from the abundance of my meditation and my provocation I have spoken until now. 17 And he answered and said to me, "Go in peace, and the God of Israel will grant your request which you have asked of him." 18 She said, "May you find grace for your handmaid in your eyes." The woman went on her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. 19 They rose early in the morning, prostrated themselves before the LORD, returned to their house in Ramah, and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered. 20 At the appointed time, when the days had come, Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for "from the LORD I asked him."
